Women’s voices are higher pitched just before ovulation

An international team of researchers has revealed that the female voice undergoes very specific changes over the course of the menstrual cycle.

Researchers at the University of Tel Aviv in Israel, Göttingen in Germany and London (UK) measured the oestrogen and progesterone levels of 70 women. And, at the same time, they carried out analyses of the timbre of their voices.

They were able to confirm that the female voice changes over the course of the menstrual cycle. A frequency “peak” occurs during the pre-ovulation period. But this change is short-lived as the voice returns to its usual timbre shortly after ovulation.

The other finding of this study is that men also have finely attuned hearing. According to the researchers, no matter how fine these nuances are, the masculine sex is able to perceive them … to the point, in fact, of showing a preference for the female voice in the pre-ovulation phase!
