What is a good source of calcium?

[8 December 2010 - 17h21]

Calcium is, in fact, a metal. Yellowish in colour and with the chemical symbol Ca, calcium belongs to the group of alkaline earth metals. Our body needs calcium to function properly, particularly for the formation of bones and teeth, but that is not all. Calcium also plays a role in muscle contraction, nerve conduction, hormone production, blood coagulation and the regulation of many enzymes.

A balanced diet will provide us with about 1000 mg of calcium each day, which is slightly higher than the recommended daily intake. According to the WHO, the recommended daily allowance of calcium is just 800mg for an adult male but as much as 1500mg per day for a woman over the age of 50. High levels of calcium can be found in yoghurt, almonds and even in parsley and watercress.

However, the food that is richest in calcium is wakame – a brown seaweed much used in Japanese cooking, in salads and in soups. In fact, wakame is ten times richer in calcium than milk, which also contains high levels. A hundred grams of cooked cheese on the rind in fact contains more than 950 mg of calcium … but a lot of fat too!
