The menopause need not always be hell…

[17 November 2011 - 18h09]

The menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive life. The clinical diagnosis is simple – it is based on the total absence of periods for a year.

However, the menopause doesn’t mean the end of a woman’s sex life. Of course, one of the most common signs is vaginal dryness but there are products available for local application that can help with this. The important thing is to talk to your doctor about it as she will be able to offer you appropriate solutions.

The most well-known problem associated with the menopause is, of course, hot flushes. These occur without warning and can sometimes be triggered by stress or emotion. Women who suffer from hot flushes experience an intense feeling of heat in the face, neck and chest which can last from thirty seconds to two minutes.

However, the menopause is not always the same for all women. There are different types of menopause: around 60% of women experience varying degrees of the problems associated with menopause, with 20% describing it as absolute hell … whereas another 20% are not even aware of it.
