Sugar – food for the brain!

[4 August 2011 - 10h37]

Glucose fuels our brain. The carbohydrate in our diet is transformed into glucose and carried in the blood to provide the energy our muscles and brain need throughout the day. As with oxygen, the brain requires a constant supply of glucose to fuel complex brain functions such as memory. And the longer and more difficult a task is, the more glucose the brain consumes!

Glucose is an essential nutriment, in the same way as fatty acids and vitamins are vital for other functions. Indeed, many studies have shown that glucose improves short-term memory, speed of decision-making, information processing and verbal recall. To ensure that you get enough glucose you simply need to eat a diet high in the simple carbohydrates found in sugar and fruit and the complex carbohydrates found in bread, pasta and rice.

In practical terms, this means starting the day with a generous, carbohydrate-rich breakfast (bread, cereal, jam, fruit, etc). This will enable you to perform well in tasks involving memory and attention up to midday. It’s also important not to skip lunch but to eat a light, balanced meal. And when it comes to your evening meal, make sure you eat some slow-release carbohydrates such as pasta, lentils and beans.
