Smoking brings on earlier menopause

[4 May 2011 - 14h52]

On average, women who smoke go through the menopause one or two years earlier than those who don’t smoke. Which is another good reason for quitting smoking. It is also worth remembering that smoking increases the risk of early menopause, even before the age of 45!

Smoking and fertility do not go well together. Smoking affects the functioning of the ovaries because it has an anti-estrogenic effect. Smoking makes it take longer to conceive and brings forward the age of the menopause by one or two years. However, the earlier a woman stops smoking, the better protected she will be against the premature onset of the menopause. An important consideration if you want to have children.
