Saving the lives of 4 million mothers and infants…
The United Kingdom has pledged to contribute 100 million pounds – approximately 143 million euros – to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) over the next five years. This contribution, aimed at “promoting reproductive health”, will help the UNFPA to increase its grassroots action considerably.
Every year, across the world, more than 500,000 women die from complications in pregnancy or childbirth. This is equivalent to one death every minute. And it’s nothing new – more than 10 million women have died in this way over the course of the last 20 years.
“It is a tragedy, but the fact that these deaths could have been avoided is another”, states Douglas Alexander, UK Secretary of State for International Development. According to his calculations, “every million pounds invested in family planning could help to save the lives of around 1,600 mothers and 22,000 infants”. The overall contribution could therefore help to save 1.6 million mothers and 2.2 million children over the course of the next 5 years.
