Sailing tha sails of Hope
“In the fight against cancer, we all have a role to play”. The role Nicolas Charmet has chosen is an adventurous one. In September at the helm of his yacht he’ll take part in his second Charente-Maritime/Bahia ocean race, sailing across the Atlantic flying the colours of the French National League against Cancer.
This 30-year old from Rennes in Brittanny, is first and foremost an activist. There’s no question of money between him and the League against Cancer – other sponsors are funding his efforts. In January 2004 he put his professional life on hold to devote himself fully to completing this great challenge: sailing single-handed and unassisted across the Atlantic on his 6.5 metre yacht.
Back on dry land he’s a regular at all the League’s national events, getting involved both with other activists and those suffering from the illness. “For a long time I saw this disease that took my mother from me when I was still a child as something inevitable, against which I felt powerless. (…) Now, with my boat, I’m doing everything within my power to play my part in the fight against cancer”.
