Malaria – 750,000 children saved in 10 years…
Since the launch in 2000 of the 10-year initiative to roll back malaria, around 750,000 children have been saved. This is thanks to massive investment in the prevention and treatment of the disease.
The authors of the most recent report by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership estimate that 3 million more lives could be saved by 2015. This may be so, but only providing that global investment continues to rise. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will in fact be holding its third fundraising campaign in November. This campaign is crucial for the future. Progress in the fight against malaria remains fragile. It is essential to strengthen efforts in the prevention and treatment of the disease.
Malaria is responsible for more than 850,000 deaths each year worldwide. Particularly in Africa where the disease accounts for around 20% of infant mortality. And in Sub-Saharan Africa, it kills 10,000 pregnant women every year!
