Going to Mecca? Don’t forget your ’flu jab!
If you’re planning to make the pilgrimage to Mecca, it’s essential that you get yourself vaccinated against ’flu as protection against a possible outbreak of the disease. This is the clear advice that appears in the latest edition of the British Medical Journal. Last year most pilgrims had not been immunised.
Professor Aziz Sheikh of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, warns that, just 20 days before their trip to the holy land, the vaccination rate among British pilgrims remains too low. And “the situation is probably even more disturbing among pilgrims arriving from developing countries”.
And the threat is real. Last year more than one pilgrim in three suffered respiratory problems during their stay in Mecca. Hence Professor Sheikh’s appeal for a massive take-up of the anti-‘flu vaccine by all those setting off on this important trip. If you are planning to go, make sure you don’t forget your ’flu jab. You should also check that all you vaccinations are up to date.
