Eat Mediterranean style ... and walk faster!

[9 June 2011 - 14h44]
[mis à jour le 10 June 2011 à 14h44]

The so-called “Mediterranean” diet has already been shown to have many health benefits: it can help us lose weight and prevent certain cancers and cardiovascular conditions. And, according to a study on walking speed, it can improve the fitness of elderly people.

Fruit and vegetables, cereals, fish and olive oil all play an important part in the Mediterranean diet – unlike meat and dairy products which should only be consumed in small quantities. It is also essential to have diversity and variety in the diet.

A team of researchers in Israel investigated the impact of this diet on one of the signs of ageing: the reduction in walking speed.

In this study, the participants, with an average age of 71, gave details of their dietary habits. According to the researchers, those who ate a Mediterranean diet took 7 seconds to cover a distance of 6 metres, compared with 8 seconds in the case of those who ate a different diet. Just one second difference … but a very significant one!
