Do you suffer from dry eyes?

[14 December 2011 - 17h02]
[mis à jour le 14 December 2011 à 17h03]

Dry eyes – due to insufficient tear production – can often be a very annoying problem. It causes a prickling, burning sensation that makes you want to scratch or rub your eyes. The symptoms vary from person to person.

Whatever the case, a lack of tears causes very real discomfort to the eyes. It can also lead to inflammation of the cornea or conjunctivitis. The causes can also be environmental: overheated rooms and tobacco smoke can encourage this type of problem.

Tear production diminishes as we get older. Dry eye syndrome is also sometimes associated with arthritis, or certain medications such as diuretics, beta-blockers, antihistamines, sleeping tablets, acne treatments and analgesics.

If this is proving a real problem for you, go and see your doctor. He will be able to establish the cause of your dry eyes. Treatment usually involves the use of artificial tears in the form of eye drops or eye wash.
