D Day for the vaccine against cervical cancer
[mis à jour le 24 November 2006 à 11h52]
Launch day for Gardasil, the anti-HPV(Human Papilloma Virus) vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer. The drug will be marketed as the result of a joint venture by Sanofi Pasteur MSD.
Announced this morning amid great media fanfare, this event … is really anything but. It does, however, confirm that, as we pointed out here more than a year ago, we are well on the way to perfecting a second vaccine that will protect against a form of human cancer. Following on from the vaccine against the hepatitis B virus.
An application to market this vaccine was lodged with the EMEA (European Agency for the Evaluation of Medical Products) at the end of 2005. Officially presented at the 2006 EuroGin Conference in Paris, the vaccine protects “100% of vaccinated women” against HPV. It should prevent most cervical cancers. Provided that priority is given to vaccinating very young girls… before they start to have sex – because HPV is sexually transmitted. And at a cost of 145,94 euros per dose, as the vaccine is not covered by French national health insurance. It should be noted that immunisation is achieved by injecting 3 doses.
