Coping with dry hair …

[24 June 2011 - 15h31]

Is your hair dry and brittle? Some days, does your hair feel like straw when you run your fingers through it? Here are a few tips to help you transform a head of flat hair full of static into soft and silky locks.

Dry hair is generally associated with having a fine scalp. This means that your hair follicles are degenerating. Consequently, they are producing less sebum and as a result your hair is less well lubricated and less hydrated. When full of static electricity, hair is more brittle and naturally has a less attractive appearance. That’s the bad news. The good news is that are plenty of ways of improving the situation.

Choice of shampoo is very important. But if your hair is dry or very dry, you shouldn’t wash it too often. Ideally, once a week, using a urea-based moisturising shampoo if possible. You should also avoid rubbing your hair too vigorously. It is already fragile and you will only aggravate matters. Take about a teaspoon of shampoo in your hand, spread it over your head, then gently massage it into your scalp and hair.

After rinsing out every trace of the shampoo, apply a conditioning treatment to deep moisturise your hair. Try one based on argan oil, for example. Finally, protect your hair from the sun. Hair, like skin, is damaged by UV rays, which tend to dry hair out even more.
