Cancer : poor Europe...
[mis à jour le 1 August 2006 à 09h40]
Public funding for cancer research is seven times greater in the US than in Europe. This is the conclusion from a European study published in the journal PloS Medicine. A fox in the henhouse.
However, French President Jacques Chirac can take some (bitter) satisfaction. It is uncertain if this is a direct consequence of the National Cancer Plan whose launch was heavily publicised 4 years ago, but France was rated as third "investor" in this area. Right behind Great Britain and Germany, and far in front of the 4th , that is...the European Commission.
In fact, European politics of cancer research seem to cruelly suffer in comparison to Uncle Sam’s. "Seem" only because this study has some surprising biases. In particular, the inclusion of countries such as Bulgaria, Iceland, Israel, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey in "Europe". Nevertheless, the authors stress that "Public cancer funding is crucial. It is important to implement prevention policies, find new treatments and improve patients’ quality of life". A perfectly logical reasoning that leaders of Europe-the real one - would gain from including in their reflections concerning priorities.
